It’s not just important that you eat healthy but, so should your dogs. The general idea behind cooking your dog’s food at home is that it’s healthier, there are no harmful additives and honestly, it’s just easier on the pocket. What really stops people from doing it, though, is the misguided idea that it’s going to take up a lot of time.

Sure, you want to spoil them with hearty meals, but really, who has the time? The Answer: Everyone.

Even if cooking and baking isn’t your forte, it’s fine. These recipes are really quick, and so simple, that even a novice chef will have no problem with them!

Why should you cook at all?

While it’s true that commercial dog foods aren’t all that bad, a lot of time, even with treats, there are quite a few additives and by-products used, which aren’t the best things to feed your dogs.

Homemade food is honestly better because:

  • You know all the ingredients going into your dogs tummy
  • It’s so easy to adjust portion sizes
  • You may not believe it, but they’ll make your kitchen smell pretty darn good
  • They’re a great way to test your baking skills
  • Your dog will feel extra special by getting treats made by you

Pumpkin Peanut Treats

Ingredients:

1 cup pumpkin puree

¼ cup peanut butter (preferably all-natural, unsalted)

¼ cup milk

3 cups rolled oats

Instructions

Beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter and milk until it’s well combined. This should take about 1–2 minutes.

Slowly fold in about 2 ½ cups of the oats just until it’s been incorporated into the mixture.

Roll the mixture into 1 ½ inch balls balls. You should be able to get about 20 from this mixture.

Coat these balls in the remaining ½ cup of the oats. Cover and place in the refrigerator until firm (approximately 1 hour).

2 Apples

½ teaspoon cinnamon powder

Plain dog biscuits, crushed

1 Cup Greek Yoghurt or Hung Curd

2 Teaspoons Water

Instructions

Pour the mixture into an ice cube tray and freeze until hardened.

Pop them out and let him enjoy a cool dessert!

Chicken Cookies

These treats are essentially biscuits for your dog and are really easy for anyone to bake. The twist comes in the flavour. Some chicken broth is added to give these cookies that extra punch!

Ingredients

2 cups flour

½ cup wheat germ

½ cup yeast

2 teaspoons salt

3 tablespoons oil

1 ½ cups chicken broth

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Line 2 trays with baking paper or grease with some butter.

Mix the flour, wheat germ, yeast, and salt in a bowl.

Slowly mix the oil and chicken broth with the flour mixture together until it is just combined and forms a dough.

Knead dough for about 2 minutes and then roll out to a quarter inch thickness and cut.

Place on the trays and freeze for 15 minutes.

Bake for 20 minutes, brushing occasionally with any leftover chicken broth.

Turn oven off, and let stand in oven for another 20 minutes.

There! They aren’t that difficult right? So go on, why don’t you show your dog a little extra love this weekend and make him some of these delicious homemade snacks!
